Inspiration

It seems I hit a wall, how do people write every day? Lately I’ve been doing more reading than writing, so today I thought I’d share some of my favorite “Inspirational” websites.

The Chopra Center ~ tons of information on emotional and physical well being and spiritual awakening. There’s a free monthly newsletter available and some free guided meditations (about 20 minutes each) on the site that have helped ‘jump start’ my day.

The Dosha Quiz ~ on the Chopra site.  This quiz gives you an inquiry into the proportion of each of the three principles – Vata, Pitta, and Kapha — within your unique mind body constitution. I learned that I should eat spicy food and drink bracing teas.

The Garden of Plenty ~ “Resources for the Rich Life from Kate Phillips of Total Wealth Coaching.” Super, great articles about money and our RELATIONSHIP with/about money and a free newsletter. Inspiring insights about “why” we do what we do and “what” we can do to change our attitudes. My favorite article is “Eight Lessons My Business Taught me in 2008

“Sometimes we have to experience something to really “know” it.  While book learning is great, the lessons from our own lives are the ones we remember.” ~ Kate Phillips

I read this for the first time in February and I’ve read it many times since then. Each time I hear something different. The first time I read it, I was feeling very inefficient, distracted,  isolated, discouraged … all things Kate talks about in her article. It was like a sharp, cosmic kick to the gut! Wow! I was so self-absorbed and NOT getting anywhere with my work/life and couldn’t figure out why. Read it. Seriously.

The Quite Mind “A collection of writings on spirituality and psychology by Dan Joseph.” One of the first articles I read  was called “Resolving the Conflict

“Much of our emotional distress comes from the gap between who we think we are and who we think we should be.”  ~ Dan Joseph

He goes on to explain that the ‘who we should be’ is based on the idea that we aren’t good enough as we are and need to change in order to be … liked/successful/accepted/whatever. And since we never think we are ‘who we think we should be’ the end line is always changing and therefore we never accept ourselves.

He suggests accepting ourselves first and then moving toward our ideals and goals. We then have a better chance of achieving our goals and won’t wear ourselves out trying to get to an impossible place or give up because we never reach the finish line.

What do 3 sites have in common?

They’re about Acceptance, Learning and Growing.  And you know what else they have in common? At the root … they are all verbs … they all require ACTION … and so do we!

  • accept: to receive willingly; to give admittance or approval; to regard as proper, normal, or inevitable; to recognize as true.
  • learn: to gain knowledge or understanding of or skill in by study, instruction, or experience; to come to be able; to come to realize.
  • grow: to spring up and develop to maturity; to be able to grow in some place or situation; to pass into a condition.

Goal for today: receive willingly … gain knowledge … develop

del.icio.us

Keep, share, and discover the best of the Web using Delicious, the world’s leading social bookmarking service.

I was planning on creating a “Favorites” page where I listed out my favorite sites for tools, social networking, html, etc. But then I started thinking that maybe del.icio.us was the way to go. Easier to create and maintain and … something that I should be using anyway, so I spent some time this morning setting it up and getting familiar with the process. Here’s what I’ve learned so far:

After signing up, you have the option to install their special bookmarking app. I added this and got a links on my toolbar to the del.icio.us homepage and bookmarks and a quick way to add a webpage to my bookmarks. It looks like the app was written by Yahoo! so their “special” toolbar shows up too. I turned that off, I’m very particular about how much “junk” shows up at the top of my browser window.

Step 2: Import your existing bookmarks

It then asks if you want to import your bookmarks. You get two options:

  • Easy Import: Automatically import your old bookmarks (recommended)
  • Custom import: choose your import settings

I choose custom import because I didn’t want it to mass-import all my bookmarks (control issues – see above) but it brought them all over anyway. Over 500 bookmarks! Lots of games from my daughter, recipes, junk sites that I don’t need access to all the time. The only way to delete them is in batches of 10 … which would have taken all day. So I deleted my account and started over.

The system let me use the same username that I just deleted (thankfully) and this time I picked “Skip Step 2” … I’ll add my own bookmarks in manually this time.

If you’re new to del.icio.us, start with the link “How do I get started” … where you’ll find some information about how to get started and some basic definitions. There’s a help section also that looks pretty detailed, but I haven’t spent much time in there. I’m basically a “play-around-and-figure-it-out” type. Then after a few days I’ll check out the help section. That’s how I learn, if you prefer reading, then head over there now and start reading.

Since I’m not importing my bookmarks, it might take some time to get everything added that I want on there, but I think it will be faster than importing them all and then deleting all the extraneous stuff. (You also have the option of ‘public’ and ‘private’ bookmarks. Maybe you don’t want the rest of the world knowing you’re  fan of  the TV show “Charmed,” for instance, you can make that one private!)

Adding bookmarks is very easy. Open the webpage you want to bookmark, click on the “Tag” button in the toolbar (the one that looks like an old fashioned clothing store tag) add your notes and your tag words and you’re done!

Add Tags: After you’ve added your bookmarks, you’ll be able to click on a ‘tag’ from your bookmarks page and see all the sites you’ve tagged with that category. del.icio.us makes it easy for you to add these. Under “Recommended Tags” and “Popular Tags” click on the words you’d like to use or if you don’t see what you want, you can type your own words in the space provided.

Add Notes. Put something descriptive here. You can copy the first line or two of text from the website or you can make up your own words but make it something that will help you remeber what the site is. Later when you open up the bookmarks, the “notes” will remind you what the site is and why you bookmarked it.

After you’ve added a few bookmarks, click on the “Bookmark” link at the top of the page. You’ll see your list that you can sort alphabetically or by most recent. At the right you’ll see your tags (you can choose to view the top 10 or all). Click on a few to see if the sites you expected to find there are actually there. You might have to make a few adjustments to how you’re tagging your sites. Doing it now when you only have a few to edit will be much easier and faster than if you wait until you have 100 or more bookmarks.

For example. You don’t have to use a comma between your tag words. If you do, it becomes part of the word! I had ‘tools’ and ‘tools,’ as tag words. I just went back and edited those bookmarks where I used commas. If I had waited until I was all done, that could have take hours and I probably wouldn’t have done it.

There’s some helpful tools within del.icio.us: I can create a public profile, add RSS feeds and send and receive links from friends. Much cleaner and easier than emailing the URL’s to myself (or others) and then having to remember to open the email, go to the site and bookmark it. Now all my important bookmarks will be available to me where ever I am.

How is this helpful? I can see using del.icio.us the following ways:

  1. A Bookmark Repository. I work at home, at my clients offices and at my clients homes. Having one central location for my important bookmarks will help me stay organized. Currently I email them to myself and put them in a “resource” folder in my email, not very efficient.
  2. Sharing with Friends (ex: Favorite Restaurants, Parks, Activities)
  3. Sharing with Clients (ex: Social Networking Tools, Blogs)
  4. Organizing by Subject (ex: Summer in Seattle, Blogs, Articles)
  5. Driving Traffic to My Blog

I’ll add more later about sending/receiving bookmarks, adding a network and how I can incorporate this into my blog. There’s a “del.icio.us” widget available through wordpress that I’ve added … you’ll find it in the right hand column towards the top of this page. I was able to choose how many bookmarks I wanted to include and what tags (if any) I wanted to show. I’m sure I’ll be tweeking this through out the week!

Budgeting Your Time

•May 12, 2009 • Leave a Comment

[scroll down for this weeks update]  I spend the majority of my ‘working’ day on the computer. I also spend a lot of time puttering around on my computer. There are times during the day when I should be working, and do, and there are times that I schedule ‘play’ time … and there are times when work and play intersect.

I have been spending more time in front of the computer lately since I’ve been focusing so much on Social Networking. There is a lot to learn and some of it is really fun. But I’ve decided it’s time to actually make a plan and schedule my time more wisely. The question is how to start?

Similar to creating a financial budget, creating a time budget requires looking at how I’m spending my time now and then creating target goals that I want to reach. Today I installed RescueTime. RescueTime is a (free) web-based time management and analytics tool. The stats give you a bird’s eye viewof how you spend your time. (RescueTime doesn’t record what apps or sites you have open, but rather what app or site you are paying attention to!) After the program has run for about a week, I will look at the numbers and then set goals to help me be more productive.

This is another “tool” that I hope will help make my life easier. I attended a seminar a few weeks ago about Social Technology. This product was mentioned as a way to help increase productivity and set goals of accountability. After I’ve used it a few weeks, I’ll add to this post and let you know how it works and if or how it has helped me with my day.

Stay tuned!

Update #1

One of the claims of the software was “RescueTime doesn’t record what apps or sites you have open, but rather what app or site you are paying attention to.”I downloaded RescueTime about 9ish this morning and this screen shot is from 4pm. I left my mail open for the majority of that time but the stats register for under 30 minutes. Pass round 1!

Update #2 (Monday, May 18)
I spent a week with RescueTime running in the background. So, what did I learn? Well, I spent less time on FB than I thought I did (good) but I also spent less time on work than I thought I did (not good).

Today I worked on tagging the sites and apps and that gave me a general idea of where I spent most of my time:

RescuetTime: Categories with blocks of time

RescuetTime: Categories with blocks of time

I didn’t tag all the apps available so the numbers above are not quite accurate. I did spend more than 3 h and 36 min on work! Unfortunately, since I’m using the free version, the system only records certain websites. If I wanted to upgrade the program would track all the sites I visit, but I’m not ready to do that. I’m not sure why it shows some sites and not others. I’ll have to do more research about that.

I’ll spend some time over the following week on that and learning more about how to tag more effectively. For example: I created a ‘facebook’ and a ‘fun’ tag. Only facebook has the ‘fun’ tag, so the time next to those two categories are the same. I spend more time puttering-around the web than just FB, but that’s all that’s showing up. Also, I only have the one email account – sometimes work related and sometimes fun. There isn’t any way to divide that time up.

I have two more sections to work through: Efficiency and Goals. After I rate my tags and categories I can pull up a report/graph that shows me how efficient I am. My next post will talk about Efficiency and after that I can work on my Goals.

After I get it set up properly, I probably won’t have to spend much time in it. Maybe once a week look at the  graphs and logs to make sure I’m spending my ‘work’ time effectively. Eventually I will probably only track working hours. There is a place to set the time the program ‘records’ your computer. I can set it to ‘turn-off’ after 5pm so it doesn’t keep track of after-hours stuff. But overall, this seems like a good program to have running.

Get Started, Suck It Up and Blog!

You’ve thought about it. You’ve talked about it. Now DO it!

I created my blog last month because I needed to learn the HOW. I didn’t expect to really enjoy the process of DOING. I write about what I’m thinking about. Sometimes it’s work related (social media is in the front of my brain these days) and sometimes it’s not (I like the one about my daughter and yesterdays is just a list of things I like to do). My post on Facebook and the one about my daughter have seen the biggest hits.

Jumped in, the water’s fine!I think if I had waited until I had a plan or direction or multiple posts in the pot (as some bloggers suggest), I would still be thinking and talking and not doing. So, my advice is … set up the blog, grab some coffee (or your liquid of choice) and w.r.i.t.e.

The ideas are there. You write everyday. You just write to a smaller audience right now. Think about all the emails you write. How much of that information could be collected and posted in one central location? How about all the promotional materials you have? Quit printing them and start posting them! Bonus – When it’s time for your clients to pass your name along (because you are so wonderful and a friend is looking for someone just like YOU!) they can send the link to their friends … and so on, and so on! It’s all about Relationships.

Nobody expects you to be Shakespeare or Jane Austin.Nobody expects you to be perfect and I promise, you’re 11th grade English teacher will not be grading this! (no red pencil’s allowed in the virtual world!) The first couple times you might feel self-conscious, but after you get the hang of it you’ll be promoting your blog everywhere!

Here’s some website that I found helpful when I was getting started:

My favorite blogs:

  • West Seattle Blog ~ Find out what’s going on in West Seattle, the MOMENT it’s happening!
  • The Garden of Plenty ~ Learn to overcome financial stress and change your attitudes about money.
  • HASeattle ~ Local politics with a satirical twist.

I have a few more, but I’m having trouble connecting to the sites right now. I’ll add them later if they return.

Have Fun!

Online Tools I Love

•April 30, 2009 • Leave a Comment

The title should be “Tools I Can’t Do Without and I Didn’t Even Know They Existed Until Yesterday But They Will Make My Life SO Much Easier!” … but that would have been way too long!

I have seen the “bookmark & share” buttons on web sites and I actually use them quite a bit. I’ve used them to post a url to my FB page or send an email to someone (or myself). I DIDN’T realize how easy (and FREE) it was to add it. I put it on Murphy’s Mix today … the entire process took maybe 15 minutes. They also provide analytics so we can see who, where & what’s going on. Pretty snazzy tool and a must for anyone with a webpage.

AddThisSocial Bookmark & Feed Button Builder

The second tool I signed up for today is ping.fm. I’ve seen posts created with this, but I didn’t understand what it was all about. Again, easy, fast and FREE tool. It took some time setting up the networks I wanted to “ping” … but nothing hard about it. Just followed the online instructions and viola! I ended up choosing Twitter, FB, LinkedIn & my blog.

Now I can type in my update at ping.fm, hit send and it blasts it out to all the sites I choose. There’s 38 networks to choose from … 38! I only have 4 … although it didn’t post to my blog and I’m not sure why. Probably won’t use it for that anyway, but I still need to figure out WHY it didn’t go. I probably won’t use it to update FB either, but for now it’s a testing ground.

There’s a few more tools out there that I want to try, but for now, these have quickly become my all time favorites!

Social Networking

•April 29, 2009 • Leave a Comment

I’ve written the majority of my posts so far about Social Networking because that’s what I’ve been spending most of my time working on the past week and I’ve been trying to find a good balance between the different sites and “real” life. I attended a biznik seminar today called “Tips & Tools for Using Social Technologies Productively & Sustainably”  where I heard about many, many tools out there (usually free!) that are available to help make our jobs/lives much easier! I’ll be checking out the tools talked about and pass on what I find later in the week.

I’ll start with biznik. Their tag line is “business networking that doesn’t suck” … and man it doesn’t and so much more. The wonderful people who started this a few years ago are VISIONARIES and the members involved are truly involved with their communities and with each other. Check out all the member written articles (my favorites right now are: “8,634,718 Simple Things You Can Do Today To Grow Your Business And Succeed” and “Why Entrepreneurs Rule the World”) and events (put on by members on their own time). There are tons of networking opportunities, educational classes and self-improvement seminars available and everyone I’ve met is just “top-drawer.” If you do any networking or marketing for your business I would highly recommend biznik – check them out TODAY! … my 1-minute PSA!

We’ve all heard the phase “work smarter, not harder” … back when “working for a living” didn’t involve 10-15 hours a day in front of a computer. I’m tired of the computer, but I have spent an inordinate amount of time learning new things the past few weeks. I’m also working on a clients website, getting it “Optimized” for search engines. But even so, I would like to cut down on the amount of time I’m online … but instead of lessening my time, I’ve added to it by creating NEW accounts … NEW Social Networking accounts … and I’m done.

I have a complete profile on biznik that I might revisit again in a few weeks, but for now I’m pretty happy with it. That’s where I plan to spend the majority of my ‘networking’ time … both online and at events. I would like to get more involved in biztalk (their versions of forums) but haven’t jumped in yet.

I created a profile on LinkedIn, and sent out requests to everyone I’ve worked with the past few years to “please add me to your network.” I currently have 12 connections, which doesn’t seen like a lot ~ but ~ connections two degrees away (friends of friends; each connected to one of my connections) is 800+ and connections three degrees away (I can reach these users through a friend and one of their friends) is 69,700. Total users I can contact through an Introduction is 70,500+. So my 12 connections links me with 70,500 professionals. That’s pretty impressive. Now, I just have to figure out how to USE that information for good!

I’m still unsure how LinkedIn fits into my “Social Networking” scheme.  I resisted using it for so long, because I felt it was more ‘white pages’ than networking. But I succumbed to the peer-pressure and joined! And since I’ve told clients I can get them set up, I thought I’d better get familiar with the process! I sent out a quick “thanks for adding me to your network” email to everyone who responded and asked if they’d seen any benefits from LinkedIn. Not everyone responded, but from those that did, I didn’t get any YES! stories. So, it’s there and I’ll work it and see where it leads me.

Twitter … I spent 2 days on twitter last week, so I won’t spend much time on it now. We talked about it today in the seminar, and it seemed like most of the people were in the same boat I am … what to do with it? I have some ideas about how to use if for my business, but first I have to get my clients on it. Those are the people I want to reach, and so far not many have found Twitter yet.

I have decided that I will not be opening up my account to the world. I actually got a request today from a women from Las Vegas who wants to follow my updates. Her profile doesn’t say what she does or who she is, but she’s had had more than 20 different careers and 250 different jobs. She’s been on twitter for 3 days and is following 1,196  and has 507 followers. How is that humanly possible?

Facebook. I LOVE Facebook! But I won’t be using it for business in any way – shape – or form. I have a few clients included as “Friends” on my page, but that’s because they are friends. I have a client who owns a store …

short detour … – Murphy’s Mix - in Pioneer Square … EVERYONE should check out her store. It’s fantastic. I can’t walk in there without finding 10 new things that I want to buy and take home with me, and this is on top of the 10 things I saw the week before. Seriously, take a trip to Pioneer Square, parking ISN’T as bad as you think and check it out!

… and she has a business page for her store. She posts information about the First Thursday Art Walk and other events happening in her store. If I had a business like that I could see doing something on FB, but not for the kind of stuff that I do. So Facebook will remain family/friends land. A place to play scrabble and trivia and find out my silly names!

So those are my 3: biznik, LinkedIn and Twitter. If there is something else out there that I absolutely HAVE to do, then maybe I’ll add to my bag of networking tools, but for now … stick a fork in me, cuz I’m done!
